Home Based Care

Our own Florence Nightingale for the Gardens, Sr. Rawson.

Sr. Rawson is employed by the St Johannis Organization and works in Gardens. She visits the residents in Gardens daily, Monday to Friday between 8 am to 2pm. Some residents need up to three visits in a morning and others just a quick hallo. It is always very reassuring to know she will turn up with her bright smile every morning.

As we get older we need a certain degree of help to be able to cope with the day to day activities and at the same time we want to remain independent as long as possible.

This situation also presents itself to residents in St. Johannis Gardens.

The St. Johannis Organisation has contracted a Home Based Care organisation, the “Creative Wellness”, for assistance in St Johannis Gardens. This is a specialized company that supplies trained personnel, that come into the homes in St. Johannis Gardens and assist residents with their daily activities of living.

Sr. Rawson oversees these carers. At the moment there are two carers during the week and one that comes in during the weekend. The following four Residents share these two carers: Professor Schwär and Mrs Schlee for a short period, while Mrs Ueberberg and Mr von Ascheraden for the greater part of the day.

The criteria for Home Based Care are:

  1. Post hospitalisation depending on the condition of the Resident.
  2. Assistance with showering, laundry and tidying up.
  3. Eleven hour day time shifts where residents need day time care and their spouse is at home at night.
  4. Companion for resident so that the spouse can have a break.

The service is charged at fixed rates according to the services given. The great advantage is that it allows the resident to remain in his/her home for a longer period. What more can a resident wish for?

News from the Organisation

The St Johannis Organisation
The development of a retirement village was initiated many years ago, by the Lutheran and Catholic Churches in the Western Cape and the Johanniter, with the objective to offer a safe haven for senior citizens and a home and environment, in which they can enjoy their last years, peacefully and carefree..
The St. Johannis Organisation primarily developed the St. Johannis Heim for those senior citizens who are still relatively independent and also for those in need of care. The nursing division cares for, in the relevant sections, for those who require various degrees of nursing, which includes the total dependant and demented. Meals are provided by an independent firm Feedem. A General Manager is responsible for the administration of the Heim
The St. Johannis Gardens consists of cottages, flats and apartments in which persons can live totally independent on a life-right basis. Nursing services are provided by a qualified nursing sister and complemented by the Nursing Section of the St. Johannis Heim. Domestic services are provided by a private firm. Maintenance is offered by the relevant department of the St. Johannis Organisation.
Although both organisations function independently, both work closely together and are dependent on mutual assistance as e.g. the admission of a Gardens resident to the Nursing Section of the Heim, when so required.
The following accommodation is available: In the St. Johannis Heim 62 beds and in the St. Johannis Gardens, a total of 52 single and double living units.

Volunteer Contribution

Saturday, the 9th May all volunteers and those who wished to participate in future were invited to a special function, with coffee and cake at St. Johannis Heim.

The Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Hon. Dr. Rinnert and his wife attended the occasion, underlining how important the work of the volunteers is for the Heim.

Several volunteers spoke of their work in the Heim and of the gratitude shown by the residents for their input.

Ralf Johannsen and Pastor Albrecht Hahne, former members of the Management Committee, who passed away recently, were specially remembered as well as their major contributions, as volunteers. We are grateful for this service.

Since the work of the volunteers is such an important building block for senior citizens, we decided to dedicate this issue of the Monitor exclusively to the volunteers and their valuable contribution.

A Special Thank you

Retirement villagers cannot function well without volunteers. The children of the residents cannot alone be responsible for the daunting task of caring for the elderly. The nursing staff is responsible for the daily caring of the residents but there are many hours that the Heim residents need stimulation and company and that should come from the community. Not everybody is mentioned here because many volunteers work behind the scenes. Therefore we had an open day to thank the following volunteers for their valuable contributions. In this Monitor we wish to thank those volunteers that work directly with the residents:

Non-resident Volunteers

Linda Becker           Occupational Therapist
Annegret Büttner     Socialising
Lydia Dedekind     Socialising
Susanne Gerhardt    Gymnastics
Miriam Höllings       Reading
Graciela Körte         Bingo
Renate Reinecke      Erzähl Café

Thank you to residents from Gardens for music:

Irmela Blaich                       Accordion and pan flute
Kappie Kappelhoff              Violin
Ulrich Sachse                       Piano and choir

In addition we wish to thank the supporting Churches in greater Cape Town for their spiritual guidance in the Heim. The following churches and organisations contributed a total of R55 608 in the last financial year: Philippi Church, St Martini Church and Senioren, St Petri Paarl, Stellenbosch Gemeinde, Lutheran Congress Stellenbosch, Table View Gemeinde , Wynberg Lutheran Church.

St Johannis Heim is grateful for the care and love from the community.

Koffie en Koek

As jy ʼn nuwe intrekker is in St Johannis Heim en naby A3 intrek, wees verseker Greta gaan jou onder haar vlerk neem en so aan jou bure voorstel met koffie en lekker koek.

The St. Johannis Heim is known for the excellent care that the residents receive.

Have you ever considered how this happens?

The reason is that the staff at St. Johannis Heim is fully committed to care for the residents. This applies primarily to the nursing staff but also to all the other employees including the administration, maintenance, kitchen, service staff, etc.

To care for older people is not always easy, each resident has individual needs; at the same time the carer needs to be patient and firm when necessary, always with compassion.

First and foremost Sister Kitshoff is the best example: as head of the nursing department, she has shaped the home for many years and brought it to the current standard.

We are all grateful to her and all co-workers for their good work.

Garden’s Koor

Brief vom Vorsitz

Dear friends of the St. Johannis Organsation,

you – the English and Afrikaans speaking friends – will be surprised that you can read this Editorial of Monitor.
Equally surprised our (traditional) German readers will be. Up to now all articles in Monitor were in German.

But we have realized that if we want to place our Organisation at the centre of our community we have to make use of some of the other languages available in South Africa.

For that reason we have decided that as from this April, 2015 Edition “Monitor” will have some articles in English, some in Afrikaans and others in German.

The other way to make us part of our community is to invite everybody who is interested to attend our “Open doors day” on Saturday 9th of May, 2015 from 10h00 – 12h00 am.
Our volunteers are going to explain their experiences at the St. Johannis Heim and tell us what they are doing.

Should you be interested in knowing more about how you can contribute to make an old person happy and at the same time become happier yourself, please come to the event.
Looking forward to see you there!

Ons Duitssprekende  (traditionele) lesers sal net so verbaas wees. Tot nou toe was alle artikels in Monitor in Duits.
